Aga Khan University: Admissions Public Health Graduate Programs for 2011

The Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi, has admissions open to graduate programs in public health for 2011.

Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Aga Khan University introduced a two-year Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Epidemiology program in October 1996, enriched and renamed as an M.Sc. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in 2000. This pioneering program, recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, is designed to develop an in-depth knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistics, and to learn their application in analyzing the major public health issues in Pakistan and developing countries, with a focused approach to regional problems and needs.

Aga Khan University’s 88 graduates are employed in well-known international organizations such as World Health Organization, UNICEF, British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (Vancouver, Canada), Centre of Disease Control (USA); academic institutes in the US, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore; public health institutes in the Middle East; and national institutes such as Aga Khan University (as faculty and fellows), Aga Khan Development Network (Aga Khan Foundation), Dow University of Health Sciences, Health Services Academy, National Institute of Health, Islamabad and different non-governmental organizations. Some have pursued a Ph.D. and have published their theses in reputable international journals.

Master of Science in Health Policy and Management

In October 2000, Aga Khan University introduced a two-year M.Sc. in Health Policy and Management (HPM) program. The M.Sc. HPM is a pioneering program in Pakistan meant to address the rapid social transformation brought about by demographic and epidemiological transitions.

The information and communication revolution and globalization are having a great impact on the health and social sectors in Pakistan. The program is designed to train professionals in strategic and operational planning, policy analysis, institutional management and in health systems research and development. So far, there have been 47 graduates from the program, who have been employed in the public sector, NGOs, semi-government organizations, hospitals, international organizations such as United Nations, World Health Organization, Asian Development Bank, Johns Hopkins, and other such academic and research institutes.
