University of Karachi logoCenter of Excellence for Women’s Studies, University of Karachi, has invited applications for admission to BS (Honors) (4 years) and MA in Women’s Studies for academic year 2012.

Introduction

Women’s Studies Center at the University of Karachi was setup in 1989 by the Ministry of Women Development and Youth Affairs. In 1996 the Center started its Master’s program in Women’s Studies and launched its M.Phil./Ph.D. program in 2002. The Center started the BS (Honors) 4-year program in Women’s Studies in 2007. Since January 2009 MS/Ph.D. classes have also been started.

The Center supervises student’s field research in innovative areas. It has initiated and successfully completed several individual and groups research projects by the teaching faculty and students, and organizes seminars and conferences. The Center works to enable students to evaluate the extent to which different development strategies have benefited women through a critical examination of some of the theoretical perspectives and analytical frameworks derived from both development studies and feminist thought.

Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary field which draws upon anthropology, history, sociology, psychology and other social sciences, physical sciences, literature and visual arts. It provides an exciting opportunity for those who have a particular interest in Women and Gender Studies and are inclined towards social science and research.
